The Final 100 Days: October 24, 1918 - A Pause

German retreats to the Hermann Line defences continued.

The past week and a half of engagements with the German Army could be characterized by the phrase “cat and mouse”. In an attempt to reach the Hermann Line, German Forces would rarely engage with the pursuing Canadians, leaving the fighting to small groups of rearguard defenders. 

This changed as the German Army reached the defences of the Hermann Line. From there, the beleaguered Armies of the German Empire would quite literally make their final stand of the war. In the Canadian sector, the First German Army would concentrate their forces around Valenciennes. 

The Corps continued their pause. In-depth preparations for an assault on these defences were being planned. For now, the Corps would wait.
