Heroes in Fatigues
The most humble of them
Will speak these words,
“The heroes are still over there.”
Those who survived
And made it back home
Are the first to say,
“The heroes are still over there.”
When we call them heroes.
They are the last to accept credit
And the first to give credit to those
They feel more deserving…
Those who never made it home.
To all of us who remained at home,
All those who stepped up
In our country’s time of need
Are the heroes.
Even those who made it home
So we could thank someone face to face.
The most humble of them
Will speak these words,
“The heroes are still over there.”
