The Final 100 Days: September 1, 1918
69 Days Until Armistice
The rapid regrouping of Canadian Corps soldiers did not mean the Corps was incapable of attack. As preparations for an assault on the Drocourt-Queant Line were being drafted, the men of the 3rd Brigade were called into action on the evening of August 31st.
Elements of the Brigade were ordered to capture the Crows Nest - a recently reinforced machine gun position atop a slope, providing an excellent view of the surrounding battlefields. The importance of the position made it extremely valuable, prompting the attack.
Using speed and the cover of darkness to their advantage, the 15th Battalion was successful in their capture of the Crows Nest - providing a significant advantage for the following day’s’ campaign.
